How Kitchen Spices can keep us healthy: Spice 16: Turmeric

Spices make our food delicious. They are just not flavor enhancers. In fact, they are OUR kitchen pharmacy!

Spice of the Day: Turmeric


Turmeric, is an all-around wonder spice. A pinch of turmeric in your daily foods will help you stay healthy!



Benefits:

  • Acts as potent anti-oxidant and anti inflammatory agent

  • Protects the liver

  • Supports digestion

  • Fights allergies

  • Boosts immunity

  • Enhances complexion


Recipe: Milagu Kashayam or Turmeric Milk

  • 1 cup Milk

  • ¼ teaspoon Turmeric (powder or fresh turmeric too )

  • ¼ tsp Black pepper powder

  • ¼ cup Water

  • 2 teaspoon Panangalkandu ( optional )

Panangalkandu is crushed palm sugar.


Boil all the ingredients in a deep bottom pan ( water, milk, turmeric and black pepper). Keep stirring and when the milk boils, switch off the stove. Drink the milk warm. It will be soothing for your throat and provide relief from sore throat, cold and cough. Drinking the turmeric milk in the night will also give you a sound sleep!
